What is Lifework?
The Oxford American Dictionary defines “lifework” as the “the major or total work of a person’s life.” That definition is too limiting for my purposes, so I’m redefining it like this:
Lifework is more than a job or something you do to make money, although that is part of it. The emphasis is on “life” instead of “work”, and the goal is to share your joys, innate talents and gifts (or “fruits of love”) with the world.
Lifework is the culmination of your:
- calling (if you have one)
- life purpose
- passions
- skills
- talents
- dreams
- personality
- gifts you have to offer the world
- and more…
Essentially, your lifework is the full expression of your mind, body and soul, and that which nourishes yourself and others.
It’s up to you to make it happen
The secret to growing great lifework is to align your mind, body and soul so your thoughts, words and deeds are growing in the same direction.
For instance, if your soul wants you to offer your gifts to the world by sharing your wisdom, but you don’t do it because your mind finds the prospect terrifying, and your body shakes at the very thought, then you aren’t fully aligned.
Our souls continually offer ways for us to cultivate joyful lifework, but our minds and bodies often, out of fear, have an agenda of their own.
The trick is to recognize and hear the voice of the soul – which is difficult to do when fear is present – and then follow through with our soul’s greatest desire. Do this and magic happens. Why? Because when you are able to express all of you, in any given moment, life becomes Bliss! I guarantee it.
Of course, this means taking risks. Stretching yourself. Going where you’ve never gone before. Daring to move beyond self-imposed limitations.
Sometimes it’s scary.
But mostly it’s exhilarating.
So, what do you most want to do, in this moment? In this lifetime?
How are you making it happen?
Decide who and what you want to be, then be it.

Your whole lifework planning series is thought provoking and quite useful. I’m going to set aside some time to do more planning for 2010. It’s never too late!
Glad you like it! I hope it works well for you. (And of course it’s never too late!)
