Love Your Lifework: Know Your Self

The first step to growing meaningful lifework is to know who you are at your core, because to love your lifework, you must know what you love.

Truly, it’s not as easy as it seems to know oneself fully and completely.  It’s an ongoing process that requires constant self-reflection.

But knowing yourself is essential because creating meaningful lifework is about living a deeply authentic life. It involves accessing the Truth of your experience, and being honest with yourself and others, while consistently taking action to grow toward health and wholeness.

Start by Feeling Fully Aligned

Here’s a simple exercise you can do to help you align with what you love. The intention is to write an “I am…” statement that is a reflection of what you love most in life.

First, make a list of the 10 things you most value. These are the things that bring you great joy. They are the qualities and characteristics of life that make you feel bliss. The things you cannot live without!

You can skip things like food, water, shelter, family, friends, etc. We’ll just assume you value those.

After you’ve made a list of your top 10 values, narrow it down to your top 1-3 words.

When you have 1-3 words, write a sentence that captures the essence of those words. You can add filler words to help with the flow.

For instance, my top 3 words are

  • Create
  • Soulutions
  • Self-expression

Start by turning it into a personal purpose statement:

My purpose is to live a fully expressed life using creative soulutions.

Then turn it into an “I am…” statement.

I am living a fully expressed life using creative soulutions.

Then ask, is it true? Are you living your “I am” statement? If so, great! How does it feel? If not, why not? How might your life be different if you start to live from that place? How can you incorporate your top values / loves into your life on a daily basis?

Referring to either the purpose or I am statement will help you re-member what you love most so you can continually choose to align with what you love.

Once You Are Fully Aligned…

After you develop a personal purpose and “I am” statement it’s easier to take make decisions and plant seeds that will help you grow an inspiring life.

This means stepping fully into your greatest self in every moment. It means pursuing dreams and accepting life’s invitations.

The trick is to allow yourself to let go of the safety and security of the familiar in order to move toward uncharted personal frontiers.

It means showing up and inviting in that which brings you the most joy.

Now go head, write that statement! Share it with us below in the comments section.
