The other night, at 2:00 am (wide awake due to a late night coffee popsicle–duh–and the full moon), I suddenly realized why my soul felt tethered in place.
It was the kind of epiphany that deserves an audible “ping” and the face-palm exclamation of, “Whoa! Why didn’t I know this before?!”
You see, my inner voice kept saying, “free me.”
And I wanted to feel free. Truly, unequivocally free.
I wanted to hop in the car and drive away without an agenda.
I wanted to wake up to the wild and untamed wilderness. To the sound of sunflowers dancing in the breeze..
Yet I felt tethered in place. I couldn’t move.
Dealing with a Tethered Soul
Have you ever felt this way? Tethered down despite feeling completely aligned with your purpose? As though you could not move forward no matter how hard you tried?
Well, this tethered feeling came with a heavy, thick-as-concrete sensation, which was not altogether unfamiliar. You might call it a block, but it was so much more than that.
I felt it in my energy body, in my physical body, and I didn’t like it. Nor could I shake it. Every time I tried to “let it go” I’d feel good for five seconds then the weight would return. With the weight came a feeling of heaviness, depression almost, and an unexpected sense of loss.
Then out of no where, I had the epiphany. *ping*
I realized the tethered sensation was the simple result of resistance. I was resisting many things.
I was mired down in “shoulds.” I “should” make a lot more money. I “should” do this marketing plan. I “should” have gotten that person to understand me. I “should not” have to explain myself. Other people “should” accept me for who I am.
Once I realized I was in resistance, that the better choice was to drop the “shoulds” and slip into trust, I was able to let go. Something released in me. I felt an expulsion, as though I’d exhaled a long held breath. My body became lighter and the sensation of freedom filled the vacancy in my being.
Resistance is a Tricky Beast
Until I had this experience, I thought resistance always looked a certain way, sort of cowardly, like a person lacking the ability to jump when the next step is uncertain, but this experience made me realize resistance is a shapeshifter. It can look like fear, anger, depression, or a big fat should.
Resistance shows up in many ways. It’s sneaky and powerful and it can wreak havoc on your life when it gains control and you don’t realize it’s really just resistance.
The key to freeing your soul is to understand how the many faces of resistance show up in your life, and then to release whatever it is you are resisting.
Home Grown Soul Medicine to Release Resistance
Flower essences are perfect for supporting you if you’re working through resistance. As energy medicine, they work on the emotional and energy bodies to help you process difficult emotions.
The other day I made a Zinnia flower essence and it’s especially good for helping people lighten up, which is a needed quality for people in resistance. Here’s the blend I made:
Remedy to Release Resistance
Zinnia to enhance lightness and childlike enthusiasm.
Willow to activate forgiveness, acceptance, and be in the flow of life.
Poison Oak to help you feel safe while being emotionally open and vulnerable.
Trusting the Divine
It’s much easier to release resistance when you trust in a higher power. Whether that’s your higher self, Source, or a support system, releasing resistance is about surrendering to the present moment and making a clear decision about how to move forward in a way that feeds your soul. Even if the clarity is just to release resistance.
