Many children display signs of their innate calling at an early age. If you have no idea what it is that you want to do, what you like to do, or what brings you satisfaction, think back to your childhood.

There are many books about finding your purpose. One of my favorites is The Soul's Code: In Search of Character and Calling by James Hillman. He discusses, to paraphrase the book cover, the "fundamental essence of our individuality, and our modern culture's refusal to accept that a unique, formed soul is within us from birth, shaping as much as it is shaped."

When I was 6 years old I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.  This is a photo of me playing "teacher." Notice the "briefcase," "overcoat" and plastic, lense-less glasses...

I played teacher all the time. Art teacher. Music teacher. Just plain old teacher. I'd set out my winnie-the-pooh and snoopy doll (which I still have, by the way) and teach them by reading Golden books about kindergarten teachers.

I got my first teaching gig less than a year after I graduated from college. I taught art. Nearly twenty years later I still teach and it brings me as much joy as it always has.
